In the modern age, tradition often goes out of the window. Rightly so. Couples today are getting engaged how they want, getting married how they want, honeymooning how they want and living how they want. It is how life should be. Whatever makes you happy is what you should pursue, it really is that simple. Of course, it can cause complications. The age-old tradition that a man should be the one to propose is archaic and old fashioned but at least it makes it clear where the responsibility lies. Recently a lesbian couple wanted to get married and it wasn’t clear who was supposed to propose, so they both did.
Caitlin Mullins and Annie Fox, both 23, met online. It turned out they had many mutual friends but had never had the opportunity to meet. According to the couple, it was likely they never would have. When they popped up on each other’s dating app, both immediately swiped right. It appeared they had similar wants and outlooks on life. Both were looking for something casual, not too serious. Yet the more they spent time together, the more they realized they could not spend time apart.
They fell madly in love and knew that they were in a relationship that they wanted to last a lifetime. Caitlin had been planning her proposal for months. She and Annie had been walking through town one day and visited a small antique jeweler, Annie tried it on, just for fun, and it fit. Caitlin came back and purchased it a few days later. Then Caitlin started to try and find the perfect moment when Annie suggested a romantic sunset hike one day, Caitlin couldn’t believe her luck, it would be the perfect opportunity.
When they reached the lookout point of the hike Caitlin dropped down to one knee and asked Annie the all-important question, “Will you marry me?”. As she waited for Annie to make all of her dreams come true and say yes, or send her into a whirlwind of depression and say no, Annie did something else entirely. Annie reached into her pocket and pulled out a ring as well. She had planned to propose during the same hike, Caitlin had beaten her to the punch by a few seconds.
Once the couple got over the confusion they both said yes to each other. While tradition is useless in most cases it has at least allowed couples to avoid a moment like this until now. Caitlin and Annie say that it was a perfect moment. They would not want to avoid it and loved how things turned out. If anything the fact that they both wanted to propose at the same time shows exactly how in tune the couple are and how they both perceive their relationship in the same way. The couple had only been dating for a couple of years so it would have been understandable if either one had felt a proposal was moving too fast, yet neither did. The couple were both in the exact same frame of mind and are now looking forward to their wedding day. They plan to have it later this year.
The strange occurrence is a fun example of how modern couples are changing the traditional view that many have of dating and marriage. In the past, online dating was taboo, in the past, same-sex marriages were banned, in the past, this loving couple would not have been allowed to be together. While the world is full of bad news and terrible ordeals, it is great to see that some wrongs are being righted and that this couple can be together, however they choose.
