Ladies, we are spoilt when it comes to marriage. In most traditions, we are lucky enough to get a wedding band and an engagement ring while the groom only gets one ring. Of course, he gets to spend the rest of his life with an amazing woman, the gift that keeps on giving. There is one downside to this two-ring bonanza; as we wear the rings side-by-side on the same finger they can rub off each other and over time this can cause wear and tear on both rings. Luckily we have found some solutions.
Depending on how the rings fit this may or may not be a problem. If they are tight enough that they don’t move you can likely have them side by side without worrying about them rubbing together. However, if they are a tiny bit looser your engagement ring will start to look worn down by your wedding ring after a few years. A marriage that is still only a few years old is in its infancy and you want your rings to reflect that. While you could take your rings back to the jewelers to have them refinished, there may be a better option.
The first option is something called a ring guard. The name is a little confusing as what we are actually describing is a wedding band itself. This wedding band is a split band that allows the engagement ring to sit inside. The wedding band essentially acts as an engagement ring holder. These ring guard wedding bands can be incredibly beautiful and make the overall wedding/engagement ring combination look stunning. However this, of course, means that the wedding band you have and the one your husband has will be nothing alike. For most couples, this is not important (as they are often different anyway) but brides want a more simple wedding band to match with the design of their husbands.
If this is not an option for you, all hope is not lost. You can also look at getting a ring adjuster. A ring adjuster is a simple solution if a ring is one size too big. The engagement ring may still be a good size but is just moving on your finger slightly too much and causing it to rub off the wedding band. This is why ring adjusters were created. It is a small chain or spring that is placed on the bottom of the ring that closes any gap between the ring and the finger. This will remove any additional space between the ring and the finger and stop it from moving around. It is an easy and simple solution. The only downside to this option is that from the bottom it can look a little strange. From the top of the hand, nothing has changed but when the ring is removed or someone looks at the bottom they will notice the additional part.
The best solution is to choose your wedding band while keeping your engagement ring in mind. Make sure they look good together first of all. If you like the wedding guard idea it can look incredible on the finger and be a really practical solution. If you don’t you can still take your engagement ring to a jeweler after your wedding and get the size adjusted to ensure it can’t rub against your wedding band. If all else fails, simply allow them to rub together. You are going to be married for a long time and your rings will go through some wear and tear throughout your lifetime. Embrace it because your marriage will go through some ups and downs as well. Each scratch on your engagement ring and each argument that you recover from is further testament to the bond you have made.
