Life can be incredibly strange. While our lives are likely not predetermined and really anything could happen, sometimes it really feels like you are meant to be with just one person. It can seem like whatever happens in life you are brought back to them and it can feel like whatever will happen in the future they will always be by your side. That is how Alexandra and Stewart Watts feel, the couple recently renewed their vows after being married for ten years.
Alexandra and Stewart met when they were five years old. They didn’t know then that they would get married. Their parents were friends and would bring Alexa and Stewart together for playdates. Little did the parents realize that the friends they chose for their children when they couldn’t choose for themselves would end up influencing who they married many years later.
When Stewart was nine his brother died and his family moved away. Alexandra and Stewart were still just children and lost touch. Then when the pair were 17 years old they met at a family party. After a brief chat, they both felt a strong bond and knew there was something worth pursuing. Stewart gave Alexandra a promise ring and told her that someday he would marry her. It was a difficult age to fall in love, both were finishing school and university was on the horizon.Â
The couple decided that they didn’t want to be apart any longer so they canceled their plans for university and decided to travel the world together. They traveled through Europe and Asia and actually lived in Tenerife for three summers. The couple was never in doubt about how they felt and at age 23 they got married.
They were young and didn’t have enough money for a big wedding. Instead, they had a simple wedding but it had everything they needed, most importantly it had the person they each cared about most, each other. Although Alexandra would have loved for her dad to be there it wasn’t possible on that occasion.Â
Ten years later, Alexandra and Stewart were now in a different position. They are financially stable and have a child, Roma aged six. Stewart wanted to finally give Alexandra her dream wedding. They spent 9,000 pounds to ensure every fairytale that Alexandra could dream of, came true. It was made particularly special because Alexandra’s father and her son were in attendance at this ceremony.
Roma was Stewart’s best man, provided the rings during the ceremony and during the afters gave a speech about his parents. It was an incredible success and made Stewart and Alexandra think about all the reasons they originally fell in love and all the new reasons they have found since then. The happy couple said that they plan on renewing their vows every decade going forward as the special day is a perfect celebration of their love and a perfect reminder of how they feel about each other.
Alexandra and Stewart are a loving and devout couple. Their story is one that captures the rollercoaster that is a relationship. What happened as a young, fast-paced romance with many late nights on Spanish sand developed into a mature and caring partnership. A commitment to spend their lives together and look after their son. A celebration every decade gives the couple an opportunity to see how their relationship continues to change and grow and is a beautiful way of highlighting that a relationship is never the same, it is always evolving and changing and that is something that should be celebrated.Â
We could all take a lesson from Alexandra and Stewart on how to celebrate love, how to not let adversity get in the way of romance and how to prioritize our loved ones in our life. May we all be lucky enough to find the love that they were fortunate to find so early in life.
