While as children many boys and girls dream of the classic picturesque wedding, as we grow older we realize more and more that we want our wedding to be a reflection of who we are. A wedding should show the personality of the couple getting married and have special moments that they can think of fondly for years to come. If those special moments happen to entertain the guests in attendance, all the better.
When Charlotte and Gavin Bell planned their wedding they wanted something that was a little bit fun, a little bit unique, was special to them but that their guests would love. Charlotte has always had a soft spot for a pack of crisps and in all honesty who doesn’t love a pack of crisps. She had seen plenty of snacks during wedding celebrations that included late-night candy carts or cheese platters being wheeled out. However, she had never seen a crisp extravaganza. She originally toyed with the idea of a crisp cart but she found a more unique approach to take.
After chatting about it with Gavin they come up with the idea of a wall of crisps. Gavin went to the hardware store and purchased some timber and chicken wire and created what looks like a victorian folding screen but instead of timber inside the frames, it has crisp packets. The display showed Gavin and Charlotte’s bright imagination, gave people something fun to enjoy, provided a good late-night snack, and a great talking point.
The crisp wall was a huge hit. For the whole night, people returned to the wall to take photos and selfies with the crisp wall as the backdrop. As the night went on the crisp wall became even more popular as people were peckish for a pack of crisps. Charlotte decided to make a theme of the crisps and only went for retro crisps that were popular during her childhood. This made finding a lot of the crisps difficult. Tangy Toms proved too elusive to get but the other classics were found in time. Charlotte was sure that as long as the fancy prawn cocktail flavor (it was a wedding after all) was on offer, guests would be happy.
Charlotte and Gavin were able to make the crisp wall in one afternoon. With a few supplies from the hardware store and some leftover paint, the beautiful crisp wall was created. Charlotte than posted about the wall on Instagram and it exploded. While she thought her family and friends might like it she didn’t expect the post to go viral. She was inundated with people admiring the wall, asking how she created it and some even asked if they could buy or rent it. The wall cost Charlotte and Gavin around 75 pounds to make in total, including the crisps, so it would not take long to make a tidy profit from it.
However, Charlotte says she wouldn’t feel right renting it out. The whole idea was to create something unique for their wedding and to start leasing out the things she used now would defeat the original purpose. Instead, she plans to keep the crisp wall for future milestones in her life. Her 30th birthday is on the horizon and she is looking forward to rolling out the crisp wall one more time.
The crisp wall is not just a fun idea. It is clear evidence that anyone can create something unique and exciting without spending huge amounts. While a wedding often goes above budget, it doesn’t have to. By working with your partner and creating a few fun ideas, you can have a unique wedding that resonates with your personality, for less.
