Wedding And Bridal Garters: Everything You Need To Know

When it comes to your wedding, there are so many things to consider. One aspect that many brides worry about is what to do concerning the garter. To wear or not to wear? What style? What budget? Have you ever asked the most important question as to why these garters exist, however, and why you should wear one? Read on to find out more.

The tradition of the wedding garter began in the 14th century in England. Back then it was considered very lucky to obtain a piece of the wedding dress. Those attending would rip small pieces off the dress for good luck. As dresses became more expensive, brides were less and less keen to part with pieces of their dress or let it be ripped. The idea of the garter was created and whoever had the garter would have all the luck.

The reason the garter itself was created rather than just a piece of an extra clothing piece to get hold of was because of what it symbolizes. In the old days, marriage was very important, it often meant the coming together of two families and back then, many weddings were arranged. Marriage was only considered a sealed deal if the wedding was consummated. With this in mind, the witnesses to the marriage would often accompany the newlyweds to the chambers to ensure consummation. The garter being retrieved from the bride was supposed to be proof that the deed was done and it was then thrown to a crowd. Whoever caught it was said to be very lucky.

The garter then became a symbol of fertility and so it was wanted by many attending a wedding. In fact, in the early days, it was not even the groom who would take off the garter. Luckily, times have changed and today, the tradition is simply for the groom to slide the garter off the mid-thigh and to toss it to the crowd.

Do you prefer the tradition as it is today, or would you like to return to the old ways?
