When Beyonce sang the words “if you like it, then you shoulda put a ring on it” everyone knows she was saying ring, right? No one heard wing? Well, it appears that at least one couple got the wrong message when they decided to get married in a KFC themed wedding. The couple from Queensland, Australia recently got married in what can only be described as the strangest, finger-licking wedding I have ever seen.
Kate and Harrison Cam are like many Australians, KFC obsessed. The franchise has been hugely successful in overseas markets and Australia is no different. However, Kate and Harrison’s obsession is more than most. In 2019, KFC Australia ran a competition for the first KFC themed wedding. Couples were asked to submit videos showing why they deserved to win the “amazing” prize. The Cam family submitted a video of them singing the theme song to the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air with the words adapted to show how much they loved KFC.
The song proved a success as the lucky couple was chosen as the winners. The competition received over 2,000 entries so the lovely duo must have thought their hopes were on a wing and a prayer when they entered. They clearly broke enough wishbones in their time together as they were picked for the unique celebration.
KFC put on an incredible event. Of course, there was a KFC food truck in attendance so all guests could enjoy buckets of KFC chicken but as well as that each table had personalized buckets, there was a KFC themed wedding cake (don’t worry, it was not chicken flavored), and a KFC photo booth. The only thing that was missing was a KFC gravy fountain. The best part of the night was when a singer that looked a lot like the Colonel sang the night away for the couple.
While it does sound like an incredible night, I am not sure I would want it for my wedding day, the most important and romantic day of my life. For me, greasy fried chicken just doesn’t scream love and happiness. Yet for Kate and Harrison, it was perfect. The couple had their very first date in a KFC restaurant and Harrison popped the question two years later. I am not sure about you but if I was taken to a KFC for a first date, that person would be very lucky to see a second date, nevermind marriage. The combination of KFC, Kate, and Harrison must be a perfect one.
The couple didn’t share their plans for a honeymoon but it seems only fitting that they would go to Kentucky to sample the chicken from where it was born. Clearly Kate and Harrison have a great sense of humor that is further exemplified in the wedding photos that were taken. While many weddings are full of longing stares into the distance under archways of golden flowers, Kate and Harrison are pictured feeding each other chicken out of their personalized buckets.
The wedding topper is a particular highlight for me as it shows a couple in a sweet moment of embrace with a bucket of KFC in the background. It shows that KFC managed to throw a great party that was excellent publicity for the company while allowing it to be a romantic celebration as well. While not to my taste I can see how they balanced the chicken with the event itself and allowed a fun event to take place that the couple will no doubt look on with fond memories for years to come. It is a smart move for Harisson too, each year he has the easiest and cheapest option for an anniversary gift; a bucket of chicken.
